An outstanding JDRF advocate family met with Representative William “Mac” Thornberry in his Amarillo, Texas office on the afternoon of January 11, 2012. Those present were Mellessa and Steven Denny and their eight-year-old son, Grant, and the Representative's staffer, Lewis Britt. The Representative told that one of his staffers has a 20-year-old son with type 1 diabetes and in addition, the Representative's cousin is a type 1 diabetic. He talked about his cousin playing football in Clarendon, Texas and that he remembers seeing him give injections during games. Representative Thornberry seemed knowledgeable about type 1 and he has a firm grasp on the science involved. The Dennys discussed their everyday trials with diabetes and its effects on their son and their family. Steven Denny explained the efforts of JDRF research. He specifically talked about the artificial pancreas, telling the Representative that the FDA is responsible for drafting guidelines to direct the development of the technology. They also discussed a news item they had seen regarding glucose responsive insulin and JDRF’s involvement. The advocates gave the Representative the leave behind information and a Texas Panhandle Calendar featuring photos of type 1 kids who are his constituents. The Dennys asked the Representative to remember Grant whenever type 1 issues come up in Congress. The Representative and Grant shook hands on the promise!
